LESSON 3-EMOTIONAL RESPONSES Events occur in our everyday lives, which cause us to lose our ability to meet our basic needs of power, friendship, freedom, and fun. This loss of control causes us to feel uncomfortable and often results in an emotional reaction. This reaction is a combination of our behaviors. These behaviors are our ACTIONS, THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS, and PHYSIOLOGICAL REACTIONS (ex: turning red from embarrassment, blood pressure rising from anger, etc.). When we lose control of our ability to meet the needs that make us feel comfortable; we can make ourselves physically sick. LESSON 4- CHOICES Why do you answer the phone? Not because it rings, but because talking to whoever is calling will help you meet your basic needs. Why do you get mad at some things people say? Not because they say something and THEY make you mad, but because YOU now feel uncomfortable. Your reactions to events are not really reactions at all, but are your CHOICES based upon your feeling of loss. Happy, sad, glad or mad, it is and will always be YOUR CHOICE!
